Porsche has released a new video in which engineers explain inductive charging for the Cayenne Electric: how power is transferred across an air gap, how foreign objects are detected and how the car is guided over the charging pad. Electrek added the video to its report on Oct. 21. The technology has been available to order in Germany and other European markets since mid-September, according to the manufacturer, with other markets except China to follow in stages.
The system consists of a receiver on the underbody and a weatherproof ground pad in the parking space. Porsche says it charges at up to 11 kW with an efficiency of up to 90 percent. If a living creature comes close or a metal object on the pad heats up, charging stops automatically. A parking assistant helps position the car precisely.
It does not come cheap: According to The Next Web, the package costs a total of 6,961.49 euros in Germany, including 5,116.99 euros for the roughly 50-kilogram ground pad and 1,844.50 euros for the hardware in the car. The pad is permanently installed in the ground. The Cayenne Electric itself starts at 105,200 euros, according to the report.
