Porsche unveiled the Mission S vision model in New York on Oct. 15. The concept was shown on a pier in Queens facing Manhattan, the same spot where, according to Porsche, the first images of the 550 Spyder were taken in 1953. The company says the Mission S represents a mid-engine supercar platform above the 911, intended as a lasting part of the lineup rather than a one-off hypercar.
Porsche gave no technical data. According to U.S. site Edmunds, gasoline or hybrid powertrains are possible but not a fully electric one, along with manual or automatic transmissions; price and timing are open. The concept borrows from many of the brand's classics, including round headlights like the 911, a flat nose like the GT1 and wheels styled after the 928. Inside, five round gauges sit behind the steering wheel; there is no fixed center or passenger screen, only a retractable MagSafe smartphone holder.
“A Porsche must be recognizable as a Porsche at first glance,” CEO Michael Leiters said. Design chief Tobias Sühlmann said the vision model “shows a fundamental strategic direction.” Porsche says the design language will soon carry over into future models. In the video, Sühlmann walks around the concept.
