An explosion overnight into Thursday badly damaged the balcony of an apartment building in Berlin's Tempelhof district, police said. Two residents of the affected ground-floor flat, a woman and a teenager, heard a loud bang at around 12:30 a.m. Parts of the flat were also badly damaged.
No one was physically injured, according to police. Paramedics looked after the two visibly shaken residents at the scene.
It remains unclear what exploded and why. A police spokeswoman could neither confirm nor deny a report by the B.Z. newspaper that a so-called ball bomb, a particularly powerful firework, had been set off, Der Tagesspiegel reported. A specialist explosives unit of the state criminal police office is investigating on suspicion of causing an explosion.
