A man is in life-threatening condition after being shot in Berlin's Lichtenrade district, police said Wednesday, correcting their initial account. Police had first said the victim was 47 and that his life was not in danger. According to the updated information, the man is 31.

The shots were fired in the street at around 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday, police said. The man was hit and underwent emergency surgery at a hospital the same evening. Initial findings point to a single gunman, who escaped unrecognized. Seven cartridge cases were apparently recovered at the scene, the Berliner Zeitung newspaper reported.

A homicide squad and prosecutors are investigating an attempted killing. The motive is unclear. A witness said there may have been an argument outside a café beforehand, which has not been confirmed. There have been repeated shootings in Berlin recently.
