Borussia Moenchengladbach avoided the worst start to a season in Bundesliga history on Friday, beating VfB Stuttgart 3-2 in the opening game of the seventh round. Gladbach had lost their first six matches; the win was also Alexander Blessin's first as Gladbach coach.
Ermedin Demirovic put Stuttgart ahead in the fifth minute after an error by goalkeeper Moritz Nicolas. Joe Scally equalized in the 38th, backheeling a Zento Uno shot into the net. Shuto Machino made it 2-1 in the 51st from a Wael Mohya cross, and Mohya added the third in the 66th. Demirovic headed in a late reply in the 83rd minute, and Nicolas denied Bilal El Khannouss in stoppage time.
Gladbach were without 10 senior players, according to dpa, and lost defender Kevin Diks at short notice. Stuttgart coach Sebastian Hoeneß made six changes after a 1-1 Champions League draw with Atletico Madrid, starting Deniz Undav and Jeff Chabot on the bench. Stuttgart remain on six points.
