Delyan Peevski, leader of the DPS party, has launched a nationwide campaign called "Shield for the People", which the party says is meant to protect citizens from poor governance and corruption. He presented it at the annual meeting of the Tolerance association of municipalities in Sofia, attended by more than 40 mayors and municipal representatives, according to BNT.
The initiative aims to bring together MPs, mayors and municipal councillors to protect public resources in ministries, agencies, funds, state-owned companies and municipalities. In its declaration, the DPS also opposes "cuts for their own sake" in state and municipal administration, which the party says drive up the cost of services through outside contracts with firms close to those in power. Mayors from the association signed the declaration.
Peevski said the state had been handed to a political force built around the former president and that the ruling majority shows "signs of authoritarianism". He also claimed the Interior Ministry had been "taken over" and that corruption reports were being shielded politically. These are DPS allegations that have not been independently verified.
