Deutsche Post plans to raise postage by a record amount on Jan. 1, 2027, with a standard domestic letter going up to 1.15 euros from 95 cents, the company said on Tuesday. Postcards will cost the same. The compact letter rises to 1.25 euros from 1.10 euros, the large letter to 2.35 euros from 1.80 euros and the maxi letter to 5.00 euros from 2.90 euros. The prices are to apply until the end of 2028.
A standard letter abroad will cost 1.45 euros, up from 1.25 euros. Prices for small packets and parcels for private customers will be announced later. The company cited years of falling letter volumes and rising staff, energy and material costs. "If fewer and fewer letters run through this infrastructure, the cost per letter inevitably rises," board member Nikola Hagleitner said.
The prices still need final approval from the Federal Network Agency, which is expected to decide in November. In a draft, the regulator had signalled room for an average increase of 20.35% for letters.
