Aston Villa won 1-0 at Newcastle United on Saturday evening. Johan Manzambi headed in a cross from João Gomes in the 36th minute. According to Sky Sports, the 21-year-old had agreed a move to Newcastle in the summer before a late offer from Villa took him to Birmingham. He also scored in the Champions League against Fenerbahçe during the week.
It was a second straight league defeat for Newcastle under German coach Matthias Jaissle after a 4-1 loss at Coventry, and the hosts managed only one shot on target, according to Sky Sports. There were boos at St James' Park at halftime and at the final whistle. According to Opta, Newcastle have gone 16 home games in all competitions without a clean sheet, the longest such run in club history. Villa drew level on points with Newcastle.
"We were dominating," Jaissle told Sky Sports, though he admitted to the Telegraph that his team's decision-making in the final third was lacking. Villa coach Unai Emery called it a "hard, tough match, but the victory is fantastic."
