Eintracht Frankfurt captain Robin Koch struck a defiant tone after public criticism from coach Adi Huetter. "Running away or burying my head in the sand is not an option for me," the 30-year-old told kicker. "I am captain and my duty is to work through this defeat together with the team." That includes respecting and accepting decisions "even if they affect me personally or I would have wished for them to be different," he said.
Huetter substituted Koch at halftime with Frankfurt trailing 4-0 at RB Leipzig on Saturday, a game they lost 6-0, and called his defense "not fit for the Bundesliga." "From a leader and captain I simply expect something different," Huetter said. Former Germany midfielder Stefan Effenberg, a Sport1 pundit, criticized the move, saying a captain should not be taken off even at 4-0 down.
There is little time to regroup: Frankfurt host Cologne in the Bundesliga on Friday.
