The 39th Tokyo International Film Festival opened on Monday and runs until 4 November. The main competition includes a film with Bulgarian participation: 'Sister Brother Manhole Cover' by North Macedonian writer-director Milcho Manchevski will have its world premiere there on 30 October, the Bulgarian news agency BTA reports.
The film is a co-production between North Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Albania, Italy and the United Kingdom. Producer Galina Toneva of Gala Films represents the Bulgarian side; Jane Kortoshev is also a producer. Lead actors Sara Klimoska and Filip Trajković will attend the premiere with the director and producers.
The tragicomedy follows siblings Viktor and Malina, who steal bronze statues and manhole covers and sell them as scrap metal. When the bust of a national hero badly injures Viktor's foot, the two slide to the margins of society. According to BTA, the film is a satire of North Macedonian society.
