The 39th Tokyo International Film Festival begins on Monday, 26 October, and runs until 4 November in the Hibiya-Yurakucho-Marunouchi-Ginza area. The opening film is Takahisa Zeze's 'Sukiyaki', a musical drama about the creation of the song of the same name, which topped the US Billboard chart for three weeks in 1963.
As its out-of-competition centrepiece, the festival is showing Takashi Yamazaki's 'Godzilla Minus Zero', the sequel to the Oscar-winning 'Godzilla Minus One'. According to the festival, it is the first Japanese production shot for IMAX. The closing film is the zombie thriller 'Colony' by Yeon Sang-ho ('Train to Busan').
Fifteen films compete, seven of them world premieres, including 'Sister Brother Manhole Cover' by North Macedonian director Milcho Manchevski. Gala screenings include Cristian Mungiu's 'Fjord' and Martin McDonagh's 'Wild Horse Nine'. A retrospective honours Kenji Mizoguchi, who died 70 years ago.
