Two days before his title defence against Alberto Puello, Dalton Smith stressed at the press conference in Sheffield that he never considered giving up the belt to avoid the awkward mandatory challenger. "I still see a belt on this table right now, so no, never. I would never avoid a fight," Smith said, according to Ring Magazine. "You can't call yourself a world champion if you're not willing to."
Former world champion Puello kept his plans to himself: "Obviously I'm not going to say what I'm going to do on Saturday night because that would mess up my plans completely." He also said: "I believe I've faced opponents in my career that are superior to the ones he's faced."
Smith defends his WBC super-lightweight title on Saturday, October 24, at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield. DAZN is broadcasting the card.
