Netflix has released the trailer for 'In Waves'. The animated film is director Phuong Mai Nguyen's feature debut and is based on AJ Dungo's autobiographical graphic novel. It opens in select theatres on 27 November and streams on Netflix from 11 December.
It follows AJ, a shy high schooler who draws and skateboards, and Kristen, an energetic surfer. She introduces him to surfing and its ties to Hawaiian culture. In sunny Southern California their romance deepens until a life-changing diagnosis changes everything. Will Sharpe and Stephanie Hsu voice the couple in the original English version.
The film opened Critics' Week in Cannes in 2026 and then screened in Toronto. 'I wanted to make a film that highlights the tenderness and the resilience in this couple and their group of friends,' Nguyen said, according to Netflix. The screenplay is by Fanny Burdino and Samuel Doux.
