Volkswagen is recalling nearly 72,700 electric cars worldwide over a possible fire risk. In Germany, the three recalls cover about 10,000 vehicles, according to data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). Mainly affected are the ID.3, ID.4, ID.7 and ID. Buzz built from 2022 to 2025, as well as the Cupra Born built from 2022 to 2024.

The carmaker said some cells in the high-voltage battery do not meet quality requirements, blaming production defects at suppliers. In rare cases this could cause increased thermal stress and, in extreme cases, a fire. The KBA said no property damage or injuries had been reported so far.

Until inspection, owners should charge to no more than 80% and attach warning stickers; where possible, the car limits its charging capacity automatically. The batteries will be checked at a workshop, and a software update may be enough. Owners will be notified by letter. In March, VW and Cupra had already recalled more than 90,000 vehicles worldwide over battery problems.
