Presidential candidate Andrey Gyurov told a meeting with residents of Varna on Monday that the head of state cannot draft budgets, run ministries or build motorways. The president does, however, have a voice to focus public attention, bring institutions together and monitor whether decisions are implemented. The president must not be an extension of the executive but a corrective force that says "no" when the government errs, he said.
Gyurov, who is running on a ticket with Kandev, listed four commitments, including protecting Bulgaria's security and independence, equal rules for everyone and being a president for all citizens wherever they live. He said he and Kandev wanted to leave their children a European, democratic, secure and prosperous Bulgaria.
President Iliana Iotova, who is seeking a full term, visited Pernik for the town's day. She attended the opening of renovated halls and the exhibition "European Spirit in Everyday Life in Pernik" at the Regional History Museum, dedicated to mining engineers and their families. The presidential election takes place on October 25.
