A major welterweight fight is taking shape: Ryan Garcia (WBC) and Teofimo Lopez (WBA super champion) are in advanced negotiations for a bout in the first quarter of 2027, according to Ring Magazine's Mike Coppinger. No agreement, date or venue has been confirmed.

The WBA is the obstacle: on 22 September it ordered Lopez to defend against Jack Catterall, with a negotiation window running until 22 October before a purse bid. Coppinger wrote: "I believe the Garcia-Teo fight will happen regardless of the WBA's ruling here."

Garcia retained his title with a second-round stoppage of Conor Benn on 12 September, while Lopez won the WBA belt by majority decision over Rolando Romero on 22 August.
