An 86-year-old woman was killed in a knife attack at a care home in Olfen, in Germany's Münsterland region, on Friday evening. A 72-year-old resident allegedly attacked several women in the facility's cafeteria. Police said he was arrested without resistance.

Two women aged 81 and 83 were taken to hospital with serious injuries. The 83-year-old was temporarily in life-threatening condition; police said she had been stabilized for now but her condition could worsen. Two rescue helicopters landed outside the home.

A homicide team has taken over the investigation. The motive, the man's relationship to the women and where the knife came from remain unclear. The suspect is presumed innocent; no date had initially been set for him to appear before a judge.
