Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany, 40, collapsed at the club's Saebener Strasse training ground on Friday while watching a session of the reserve team and was taken to a Munich hospital by an emergency doctor. The club confirmed the incident in the evening, saying Kompany would undergo comprehensive examinations at the hospital and remain under medical care. Bayern have given no further medical details.

"Vincent Kompany's health is our top priority," sporting director Max Eberl said, adding that the Belgian would be given all the time he needs to recover. His coaching staff will handle training and match-related activities until further notice. Assistant Aaron Danks is expected to lead the team in Sunday's Bundesliga game at SC Freiburg (1630 GMT), according to several media reports. The reserve team's regional league match against DJK Vilzing scheduled for Saturday was called off.

Kompany had already been unwell last week. He gave no interviews after the 6-1 win over RB Leipzig, and Danks stood in for him at the news conference before the Champions League match against Arsenal, describing it as "only a virus". Kompany was back on the touchline for Wednesday's 2-2 draw with the London club. His former club Manchester City were among those wishing him a speedy recovery.
