Lines formed overnight outside Apple Stores, including in Chicago and Las Vegas, as the iPhone Duo, which Apple calls the first foldable iPhone, officially went on sale on Friday. In Las Vegas, a line of 30 to 40 people at 4:15 a.m. local time had grown to probably more than 150, according to the specialist site 9to5Mac.

Apple had said it would have only "limited" inventory in its retail stores, which 9to5Mac said appeared to be the case. Staff pointed disappointed shoppers to the Apple Store app, where in-store availability details are due the next day.

According to Apple's September announcement, the Duo has a 7.6-inch inner and a 5.4-inch outer display, a titanium frame and the A20 Pro chip. Prices start at $1,999. It launches in more than 70 countries, with 28 more markets from Oct. 30.
