A magnitude 7 earthquake struck northern Tibet on Thursday, the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) said. The epicenter was in a county in the Nagqu region, about 400 kilometers from the regional capital Lhasa. The quake hit at about 10:33 p.m. local time (1433 GMT), and CENC said it was clearly felt in the local area.
CENC put the depth at 10 kilometers. India's National Center for Seismology reported a depth of 173 kilometers. The area within 5 kilometers of the epicenter has an average elevation of about 4,864 meters. A magnitude 5.0 tremor was recorded in the region about 40 minutes later.
There was no immediate information on deaths, injuries or damage. The region was hit by deadly flash floods only weeks ago. In January 2025, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Tibet killed more than 120 people.
