Officers from the DANS security agency and the organised crime directorate GDBOP entered the town hall of Sungurlare municipality in the Burgas region on Tuesday and seized documents. They are examining public procurement: how contracts were carried out, what they were worth, how much was paid and whether the work matches the money. According to BNT, there is information that 'huge sums' were diverted from the budget, as well as about fictitious activities and flawed practices in choosing contractors. No specific amounts were given.
Mayor Dimitar Gavazov told BNT he was returning from a business trip and had not yet been briefed on the police action. Several media outlets, citing their own sources, reported a number of detentions. There was no official confirmation of who was detained or of any charges at first. Gavazov has been mayor since November 2023, when he won in the first round as the DPS candidate.
