VfB Stuttgart drew 1-1 with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night, staying unbeaten after three games of the league phase. Following two opening wins, the result gave the German side a seventh point. Jamie Leweling rewarded a strong first-half display by putting Stuttgart ahead in the 36th minute.
Atletico hit back shortly after the restart when Julian Alvarez equalised in the 47th minute. Atletico midfielder Morten Hjulmand was shown a straight red card in the 64th minute for a reckless foul on Angelo Stiller near the halfway line. Despite almost 30 minutes against 10 men, Stuttgart could not find a second goal past Diego Simeone's side and goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
"Before the game we could have lived with the point," captain Grischa Proemel told ZDF, according to its report. Goalscorer Leweling pointed to the lapse after the interval: "We have to somehow get rid of this sleepiness after half-time." Stuttgart made an early change when Assignon replaced Vagnoman in the 52nd minute, and Ermedin Demirovic later came on for Leweling. With seven points from three games, Stuttgart remain well placed in the race for the top spots in the league phase.
