Bulgaria's organised crime directorate GDBOP carried out an operation against suspected online fraud in several cities on Tuesday. In Burgas, officers entered an IT specialists' office on the second floor of a building in the industrial zone of the Slaveykov district at around 11 a.m. They broke open the front door, while part of the team climbed a ladder to get in through the terrace. Computers and laptops were seized. In the first hours it was unclear whether anyone had been detained.
Later in the day BNT reported that people had been detained, without giving a number. According to unofficial information, several call centres around the country were also checked. The investigation concerns fraud via investment platforms and websites: victims were allegedly persuaded to put money into non-existent financial products or to hand over personal data. There was no official statement from GDBOP or prosecutors at first. The number of victims and the amount of damage were not disclosed.
