Morning-after pill at the pharmacy: England passes 500,000 free consultations

For a year, emergency contraception has been free in England's pharmacies without a GP appointment. NHS England says the service mainly reaches women in poorer areas – no figures have been given for this so far.

Since October 2025, anyone in England who needs the morning-after pill no longer has to book a GP or sexual health clinic appointment: pharmacies supply emergency contraception free on the NHS, the same day, after a confidential consultation with a pharmacist or trained pharmacy technician. Pharmacies have since carried out around 530,000 such consultations, Kirsty Armstrong, senior policy lead for clinical strategy for pharmacy at NHS England, told the Pharmacy Show in Birmingham on 11 October, as The Pharmaceutical Journal reported on 14 October. In the first five months to March 2026, nearly 305,000 doses were supplied, according to NHS England.

Emergency contraception is part of a pharmacy contraception service that began in April 2023 with repeat supplies of the pill and, since December 2023, also allows women to start it. By March 2026, 9,958 of England's 10,398 pharmacies (95.8 per cent) were offering oral contraception. Armstrong said the supply was “positively impacting health inequalities”: the more deprived a postcode area, the more emergency contraception is supplied there. Back in July, Dr Sue Mann, the NHS National Clinical Director for Women's Health, already pointed to a particular impact in more deprived communities, describing the service as offering “no appointment, no waiting and no judgement.”

The report contains no figures on the link with deprivation and mentions no independent evaluation. The service is set to expand: once pharmacists are able to prescribe independently from autumn 2026, vaginal rings, patches and depot injections are among the additions planned. Emergency contraception is also available on the NHS in Scotland and Wales, and can be bought over the counter in pharmacies. On 1 July 2026, the College of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare called for the morning-after pill to be sold in shops and other retailers as well.
