US box office: 'Clayface' earns $9.5 million on Friday and heads for No. 1

The DC horror film is eyeing a $23–25 million opening. Nathan Fielder's A24 documentary 'You Can See Everything' is even growing in its second weekend.

'Clayface' took in around $9.5 million on its first day in US cinemas, including $3.5 million from Thursday previews, according to Deadline's estimates. That points to a $23–25 million opening weekend from 3,458 theatres – slightly below pre-release forecasts of $25–30 million. The film's net production cost is $44 million.

For comparison, DC's 'Supergirl' opened with $37.1 million in North America this summer. Internationally, too, 'Clayface' is starting below 'Supergirl' in its first markets.

Its strongest rival is Nathan Fielder's A24 documentary 'You Can See Everything', which made $5.8 million on Friday and, after expanding to 2,655 theatres, is on course for around $19 million in its second weekend – more than its $15.6 million opening. That would bring its ten-day total to $44.6 million. Official estimates follow on Sunday.
