Winter has arrived in the Pirin Mountains: on 14 October the Focus news agency, citing footage posted on social media, reported the season's first snow at the Yulen piste and the Vihren hut above Bansko. Pirin National Park in southwestern Bulgaria has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1983; its boundaries were significantly extended in 2010. According to UNESCO, the property covers 38,350 hectares plus a 1,078-hectare buffer zone and ranges from 1,008 to 2,914 metres above sea level. The highest point is Vihren Peak, according to Bulgaria's Ministry of Tourism. According to the ministry, the protected area was established in 1962, then under the name Vihren.
UNESCO highlights a high-mountain landscape shaped by glaciers: cirques, deep valleys and more than 70 glacial lakes, plus waterfalls, screes and caves. The coniferous forests hold Macedonian pine and Bosnian pine, including many very old trees. UNESCO records 1,315 vascular plant species, among them 86 Balkan endemics, as well as 45 mammal species such as brown bear, wolf and pine marten, and 159 bird species.
Protection has not been free of conflict. In October 2025 the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) rated the site's conservation outlook as 'good with some concerns'. It lists ski infrastructure near Bansko, in the buffer zone, as a high threat that has caused significant and repeated damage to the site's Outstanding Universal Value in the past; no new facilities are planned and ski slopes are being restored. The IUCN rates ATVs, grazing and water abstraction as low threats; the impact of climate change is listed as data deficient. According to the banskoski.com website, as cited by Focus, the Bansko ski season is due to run from 1 December to 11 April 2027; the operator reserves the right to change the dates depending on weather and snow cover.
