A truck crashed into the end of a traffic jam on Berlin's A100 city highway near Tempelhofer Damm late Wednesday, police said. Several vehicles were damaged in the rear-end collision. Several people suffered minor injuries, and some were taken to a hospital for treatment. Police did not initially say exactly how many people were hurt or how many cars were involved.
The A100 was fully closed after the crash. Police said recording the accident, clearing the roadway and subsequent repair work lasted into the early hours of Thursday. Police described the property damage as considerable. They have not yet commented on the cause of the crash, which is under investigation. There was also no official information at first on the direction of travel or the exact time of the accident.
Drivers also faced a separate, planned closure on the southern section of the city highway overnight. According to Berlin's traffic information center, the A100 was closed southbound between the Oberlandstrasse and Treptower Park/Spaethstrasse junctions from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. for maintenance work in the Britz and Grenzallee tunnels.
