Investigators have released new details after the deadly shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. According to CBS News, all the victims were shot in the same classroom near the entrance. Three children and a teacher were killed; another child and a staff member are in critical condition in hospital. Police say another teacher threw her phone at the attacker, tackled him and fought to take his weapon; she was not injured. She "almost certainly" helped prevent more bloodshed, said Police Chief Mike Krantz.

The suspect, a 16-year-old, was a former student at the school who was no longer enrolled in the district. An armed local man whose children attend the school stopped him by shooting him; the teenager died. The man's family said he wanted to thank first responders, school staff and the community. According to law enforcement sources cited by CBS News, the teenager used a shotgun from within his family; police said he still had 44 rounds on him. Police have not given a motive, and the FBI and ATF are assisting. Bend-La Pine schools cancelled classes and sports events on Friday; the night before, hundreds gathered in a park to remember the victims.
