A new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research raises warning signs for Republicans ahead of the midterm elections. About half of registered voters want "substantial change" in Washington, and roughly 3 in 10 want complete upheaval. Only about one-third view President Donald Trump favorably, and a similar share approve of his job performance.
About 8 in 10 voters cite the economy or the cost of living as a top issue, while about two-thirds name health care and the war in Iran. About 8 in 10 disapprove of Trump's handling of the cost of living. Among Republicans, 44% approve of his handling of costs, 54% of his economic leadership and 69% of his foreign policy.
About half of voters prefer Democrats to control the House or the Senate, roughly 4 in 10 prefer Republicans and 15% are undecided. Democrats appear more enthusiastic about voting, though only about 4 in 10 voters view the Democratic Party favorably. The poll of 1,119 adults, including 925 registered voters, was conducted Oct. 8-12.
