Florian Wirtz helped Liverpool to a third win from three Champions League games on Tuesday night. In the 4-3 (2-2) victory over Villarreal, the 23-year-old replaced Ronald Araújo at half-time and slotted home a low finish from Cody Gakpo's pass to make it 4-2 in the 68th minute. According to Sport1, it was his first competitive goal of the season – and, after assists against LASK and at Brentford, the first time in a Liverpool shirt that he has been involved in a goal in three consecutive games.
Coach Andoni Iraola said workload was the reason Wirtz started on the bench: he could probably have started, but Iraola did not want to take the risk, as it would have been the fourth start in ten days for Wirtz and Conor Bradley. Former England striker Alan Shearer, working as a pundit for Amazon Prime, praised the German's finish.
For Germany, Wirtz scored in the 2-0 win over Serbia on 1 October. The next internationals under national coach Jürgen Klopp are against Serbia in Belgrade on 13 November and against the Netherlands in Berlin on 16 November.
