Wolfsburg beat third-placed Heidenheim 3-1 in the second division of German football on Saturday. Alexander Bernhardsson put the hosts ahead at the Volkswagen Arena in the first minute, set up by Vinicius Souza. Patrick Mainka equalized in the 21st minute before Robert Glatzel restored the lead in first-half stoppage time from a Joakim Maehle cross.
Muhammed Damar sealed the win in the 65th minute after a pass from Fabian Reese. Heidenheim also had chances before the break, with Cleiton clearing a Jan Schoeppner header off the line and a goal ruled out for offside. Referee Tom Bauer showed four yellow cards to Wolfsburg and one to Heidenheim.
It was Heidenheim's first loss since matchday two. Wolfsburg, who had drawn their previous two games 4-4, now have 15 points and move ahead of Heidenheim on 14. Goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther returned for Wolfsburg after a knee injury.
