Chelsea handed Everton their first Premier League defeat of the season on Saturday, winning 2-0. Pedro Neto scored 43 seconds after the restart and again in the 90th minute after a Jordan Henderson free kick struck the wall. It was Neto's first Premier League double.
The game turned on a contentious 42nd-minute incident in which Chelsea's Morgan Rogers, already booked, caught James Garner's knee with his studs but stayed on the field after referee Paul Tierney took no action. "I think it's a minimum yellow, but I called red straight away," former referee Mike Dean told Sky Sports. Chelsea goalkeeper Martinez was stretchered off after a collision with Jarrad Branthwaite and was replaced by 21-year-old Mike Penders.
Xabi Alonso's side now have 13 points from seven games. It was Chelsea's first win at Everton since August 2022 and their first league clean sheet in nine months.
