Cigarettes in Bulgaria are set to become more expensive again in 2027, BNT reported, citing the draft budgetary plan sent to the European Commission. From March 2027, the excise duty will rise to €126 per 1,000 cigarettes. It was already raised from €113 to €120 in August 2026, and a third increase is planned from 1 January 2028.

The faster rise is expected to bring in additional VAT and excise revenue of €220.2 million in 2027, or 0.16% of GDP. The report does not say what the excise rate will be from 2028.
