The Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water in Sofia will draw up administrative violation reports against the mayors of Sofia's Kremikovtsi and Novi Iskar districts over illegal dumps. Environment and Water Minister Rositsa Karamfilova-Blagova announced this during parliamentary question time on Friday, BNT reported. Both mayors have been summoned to appear on 20 October.
After an inspection in June, the mayors were ordered to remove the waste. The mayor of Novi Iskar turned to the Sofia municipal inspectorate, which ordered owners to clean up private plots, while Kremikovtsi told the inspectorate that, as a secondary budget holder, the district had no money for the clean-up. The minister noted that some of the plots are public property.
A new inspection in early October again found pollution with used tyres, plastic, wood, construction waste, bulky waste and household waste. The plots remain unfenced and freely accessible to outsiders.
