Germany's federal government is planning a partnership with U.S. chipmaker Nvidia to advance artificial intelligence in German industry, government sources told broadcaster ZDF and the dpa news agency, confirming an earlier report by the Handelsblatt newspaper. The plan has not been officially confirmed. The government is prepared to invest a three-digit million-euro sum, which could come from reserves of its Hightech Agenda.

The initiative focuses on so-called physical AI, used to train robots and autonomous vehicles, and on AI models for factories of the future. About a dozen German companies, including Siemens, Audi and Black Forest Labs, reportedly want to take part. Nvidia would send engineers and supply chips, while part of the government funding would subsidize renting computing capacity on a Deutsche Telekom AI cloud.

The partnership could be announced at the "Invest in Germany" summit in Berlin on Monday and Tuesday. Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang are expected at Monday evening's opening. According to the Berliner Zeitung, Nvidia has so far only confirmed Huang's attendance.
