Berlin police have arrested a man whom Swedish police consider a leading figure in a criminal network in the greater Stockholm area. According to Swedish authorities, the arrest took place on Thursday. The suspect is aged between 30 and 39 and had been staying in Germany temporarily.

Police said the arrest followed a joint operation by German, Romanian and Swedish investigators involving surveillance and tracking over an extended period. Anders Wiberg, head of an international unit of the Swedish police, described it as an extensive operation.

Investigators suspect the man of committing serious violent crimes in Stockholm and of having belonged to the network for several years. He is also suspected of continuing to influence crime from abroad, said Tobias Cederlund of the Stockholm police. Authorities did not initially give details of specific charges or possible extradition; he is presumed innocent.
