Volkswagen is expanding its range of extended-range electric cars in China. The SAIC Volkswagen joint venture launched the ID. ERA 8X on Oct. 12, trade site CnEVPost reported. The SUV is 5.02 meters long, almost 2 meters wide and 1.75 meters tall, with a 2.97-meter wheelbase, making it nearly 19 centimeters shorter than the ID. ERA 9X launched in April.

The wheels are always driven electrically; a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with up to 105 kW serves only as a generator. The base Pro version has one electric motor with 220 kW, the Max versions two motors with a combined 370 kW. The all-wheel-drive versions produce 660 Nm and reach 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds. With the 51.1-kWh battery, the Pro covers 373 kilometers on electricity alone under China's CLTC cycle; with the 65.2-kWh CATL pack it is 451 kilometers, and total range reaches up to 1,602 kilometers.

According to Carscoops, all versions get a Momenta driver-assistance system with a 192-channel lidar and 26 sensors, and the cockpit has two 15.6-inch screens. List prices range from 226,800 to 289,800 yuan, according to CnEVPost; with a limited-time discount, the ID. ERA 8X starts at 206,800 yuan, or about $30,700.
