Announced job cuts with a number (table)5,670

Over the weekend, companies and media in Germany reported no new plants, groundbreakings or closures with figures. The latest data remain the insolvency figures of 9 October: 2,373 company insolvencies in July, 8.0% more than a year earlier and, according to dpa, the highest figure for a July in 13 years.

Catch-ups from the week: GSK plans to close its vaccine plant in Dresden; according to Berliner Zeitung, 641 jobs are at stake. This was first announced on 10 September – flu vaccine production is to move to Canada, with the plant closing by summer 2028. This week staff protested and Saxony's premier Michael Kretschmer pledged them his support.

According to the IG Metall union (6 October), motor maker Nidec plans to close production in Bietigheim-Bissingen (Baden-Württemberg) by the end of 2027, affecting 116 employees. Carl Zeiss Meditec is cutting 'a mid-double-digit number' of jobs in Jena, according to the company (Schwäbische Post, 8 October).

After re-checking our sources we removed three entries reported by only a single online magazine (Siemens Erlangen, Semikron Danfoss Flensburg, LR Ahlen) and dropped the unconfirmed amount for Covenant in Leipzig. The investment total in the table is therefore EUR 2.40bn, and announced job cuts with a firm number total 5,670 (including GSK and Nidec). Zeiss is not counted as there is no firm figure.
