Instrument maker Analytik Jena opened new buildings in Thuringia: on Thursday in Jena and on Friday (16 October) in Ilmenau. Swiss parent Endress+Hauser invested around EUR 96m in total – about EUR 64m in Jena and EUR 32m in Ilmenau. 420 people work in Jena and more than 80 in Ilmenau. There is no firm pledge of new jobs; the Jena building has room for about 550 workplaces.

Chipmaker Globalfoundries wants to expand its Dresden plant further. According to Handelsblatt (Friday), a EUR 1.5bn phase is planned from 2028. A spokesperson did not confirm this, saying there are no concrete plans yet. The current EUR 1.1bn expansion, backed by EUR 495m in subsidies, is due to start series production in 2027. We therefore do not count the EUR 1.5bn.

Bad news from Saxony-Anhalt: car parts maker Weber Magdeburg (around 120 staff) has filed for insolvency. It makes cylinder heads for combustion engines. Its main customer Porsche had announced it would pull all orders. A provisional administrator is now examining ways to stabilise the company. At machine builder Kiefel in Freilassing (Bavaria), the IG Metall union criticised plans to cut about a third of jobs.

The Federal Statistical Office reported on Friday that 20,600 dwellings were approved in August, 6.8% more than a year earlier; January–August was up 12.1%. The table's investment total rises to EUR 2.57bn. Announced job cuts with a firm number fall to 5,199, because the GSK report from September is older than four weeks and has been dropped.
