The Bulgarian Stock Exchange (BSE) in Sofia has had a very strong week. SOFIX, the main index of the 15 key shares, rose in all five sessions from 19 to 23 October. It closed at 1,679.50 points, 10.36% above its level of 16 October. Investor.bg calls this an almost 19-year high. By 21 October the index had gained 40.02% since the start of the year (infostock.bg), followed by two more up days.

The gain came in two big jumps. On Wednesday SOFIX added 3.19%, and on Thursday 3.55%. On both days Eurohold Bulgaria was the top riser: up 19% to €1.68 and up 13.69% to €1.91. Over the week, shares in the holding, which owns energy utilities, rose 39.69% to €1.83. Market reports give no reason. On single days Chimimport, Sopharma and Central Cooperative Bank also rose sharply.

Turnover was uneven. From Monday to Wednesday it was €7–7.7 million a day, and about €2.8 million on Thursday. On Friday it jumped to €20.47 million because of a €13.09 million block of Fibank shares. A day earlier the bank had said it will buy back up to 3 million of its own shares on the market. Other energy stocks trade rarely: Petrol at €0.308 (23 Oct), and Bobov Dol power plant with no trade since 23 September.

Outlook: listed companies must publish their stand-alone quarterly notice within 30 days of the quarter's end – for the third quarter, by the end of next week. Consolidated notices have 60 days. We found no weekend filings from energy companies.

Only 29,000 new US jobs in September: investors now see little chance of a Fed rate hike this month. Tech stocks led the gains.
