Russian President Vladimir Putin offered to help Iran end its war with the United States, telling Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian that Moscow was ready to do “everything in our power.” Meeting on Thursday, Oct. 8, in Avaza, a Caspian Sea resort in Turkmenistan, Putin said Tehran had made “genuine efforts” to resolve the conflict. Russia is not an official mediator; talks between Washington and Tehran have been brokered mainly by Qatar and Pakistan.
Pezeshkian said the two sides had exchanged new proposals to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and that Iran was revising them before finalizing them through mediators. He also accused Washington of bad faith. “We are talking, but every time we negotiate with the United States, they attack again,” he said, according to Euronews, adding that Iran would not abandon the negotiating table. President Donald Trump has ruled out new strikes on Iran before the Nov. 3 midterm elections and has called the talks productive.
On Friday, Putin used a summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States, which Pezeshkian attended as an observer, to call for closer ties among former Soviet republics. He said Russia's trade with CIS members topped $110 billion in 2025, with 90% settled in national currencies, The Associated Press reported. He did not mention the war in Ukraine. Kyiv and Western governments accuse Iran of supplying Russia with Shahed drones and short-range missiles.
